The new world of IT

Custom software is no longer just for companies with billions of dollars in revenues and large IT departments. The cost of developing custom solutions has gone down over the years. I remember that only 5 years ago a custom business solution could cost 2-3 times more to develop then today.

But how is it possible? Salaries increase, consultant rates increase, and gas prices are ridiculous… The reason for such a change is due to constantly increasing number of open source technologies, frameworks and even complete customizable open source solutions. Depending on the requirements, a custom solution can be assembled with existing tools and frameworks in a matter of weeks, sometimes without any programming. For more sophisticated solutions, 3-6 months is now the norm. Two or even one year long projects are a thing of the past.

Most of us who spent years and years developing code from scratch had to adapt to the new ways of developing custom solutions. We can now deliver so much more and in a fraction of time and we love it.

Large companies with internal IT departments and armies of developers still have to adapt to “The new world of IT”.

As far as small and medium size businesses, you no longer have to rely on expensive off-the-shelf commercial products which provide limited or no customization. It’s happening. More and more SMBs are taking charge and developing custom solutions to fit their business as oppose to fitting their business into a solution.
